With over 30 years of experience in device protection, ESET is one of the top names in the cybersecurity industry. ESET also often gets praised by leading independent testing labs for its strong malware detection capabilities and low system impact.

ESET Home Security: Plans Explained

Launched in November 2023, ESET Home Security is a central management platform that lets you manage subscriptions, connected devices, and security settings from one place. It comes in three tiers and can help protect multiple devices at once.

The Three Main Tiers

  • ESET Home Security Essential (aka ESET Internet Security) focuses on core antivirus protection. It includes real-time protection, a firewall, parental control, webcam protection, banking protection, and anti-theft. This multilayered approach helps safeguard devices against viruses, trojans, and other threats.
  • ESET Home Security Premium (aka ESET Smart Security Premium) includes all Essential features and adds a few advanced ones. It includes ESET Folder Guard and Secure Data for sensitive data protection, VPN, and ESET LiveGuard cloud protection. It’s designed for those who want more than basic antivirus coverage and want to enhance both network and file protection.
  • ESET Home Security Ultimate (aka ESET Security Ultimate) is the flagship product. It combines all the features from lower-tier plans and then adds a few extras. It includes VPN for router, ESET Identity Protection, Ransomware Remediation, and advanced browser and privacy protection.

ESET Home Security System Requirements (Windows)

A nice thing about the ESET Home Security product line is that all three tiers, Essential (system requirements), Premium (system requirements), and Ultimate (system requirements), share the same minimum system requirements.

  • OS: Windows 10 (64-bit) and Windows 11 (64-bit)
  • Processor: Intel or AMD processor, 64-bit (x64), 1 GHz or higher, ARM64-based processor, 1GHz or higher

Note: Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, and the latest ESET builds no longer support 32-bit Windows (the last compatible version is 18.2). An internet connection is also required for activation and updates.

During testing on a Windows 10 (64-bit) virtual machine with 4 GB of allocated RAM, the program installed and ran smoothly without any issues.

As for disk space, both Essential and Premium used only 113 MB after the initial setup.

ESET Home Security Interface

This screenshot shows the ESET Home Security Essential interface, labeled as ESET Internet Security in the app.

ESET Home Security keeps things simple with a clean, organized, and consistent layout across all subscription tiers. While the overall interface structure remains the same, the features displayed on the main dashboard vary by plan.

Let’s start with what stays the same.

When you launch the application, ESET greets you with a dashboard divided into two sections.

The left panel includes multiple options that let you explore the program features and its settings in more detail, such as:

  • Overview
  • Computer Scan
  • Update
  • Tools
  • Setup
  • Help and Support
  • ESET HOME account

The right panel displays the overview area. The top half of the window features a color-coded banner that reflects your system’s security status, followed by a notifications section for suggested security actions.

At the bottom is the features cards area, which acts as a quick access point to key tools. This is where the experience begins to differ by subscription tier.

  • Essential displays cards such as Browser Privacy, Network Inspector, Anti-Theft, and Safe Banking & Browsing.
  • Premium and Ultimate show additional options (for example, ESET Folder Guard, Identity Protection, VPN, and more).

That said, while the interface is clean and modern, it can take some time to get comfortable with the program. The visual cues are not as intuitive as those of other antivirus programs in the market. This can make navigation slightly confusing at first. Still, with regular use, it becomes easier.

ESET Home Security Essential: Key Features

ESET Home Security Essential includes core device protection features along with several useful extras to enhance overall security. Let’s take a closer look at the feature offerings:

Real-time file system protection

ESET Home Security Essential real-time file system protection settings showing scan options for local drives, removable media, and network drives.

Like any antivirus app, ESET’s Real-time protection feature is enabled by default. It actively scans local drives, removable media, and network drives for potential threats from the moment the system boots up. If it encounters any suspicious activity while opening, downloading, or running files, it blocks it instantly to help keep the PC safe. Additionally, ESET uses ThreatSense technology, a proactive, heuristic-based engine that protects against new threats and zero-day attacks rather than relying solely on traditional signatures.

Scanning options

ESET Home Security includes on-demand scanning options such as Full scan, Custom scan, and Removable media scan. Furthermore, you can configure scans, create scan profiles, and adjust scanning parameters based on your security needs. This makes it easy to manually check for threats if anything feels off, giving you more flexibility.

Scan Scheduling

While scan scheduling is possible, the setup process can feel a little overwhelming, especially for non-techy users. To schedule a scan, go to Tools > Scheduler > Add Task. From there, choose On-demand computer scan as the task type, click Next, and set the preferences accordingly.

Network Inspector

Another notable and effective feature included in ESET is the Network Inspector tool. It helps you identify vulnerabilities in trusted networks (e.g., home or office networks), such as open ports or weak router passwords, so you can take steps to tighten network security. It also lists all connected devices (e.g., printers, routers, mobile devices, IoT devices), providing a complete view of what’s on the network.

Firewall Protection

The ESET Home Security lineup also includes a solid two-way firewall component that monitors both incoming and outgoing network traffic. It uses built-in filtering rules for protection while allowing you to customize them to enhance security, helping protect the system against network-level threats and unauthorized access.

Anti-Phishing Protection

Enabled by default, ESET Home Security’s Anti-phishing protection feature is included in all three tiers. It blocks access to deceptive web pages that you try to visit and that can jeopardize critical data, such as bank account numbers, PINs, etc.

Parental Control

ESET parental control settings showing content categories and age-based filtering options on Windows.

All three tiers of ESET Home Security include Parental Control features. It lets you filter age-inappropriate content by categories (e.g., religion, science, shopping, sports, finance, technology, etc.), and add web page exceptions. You can also protect parental control settings with a password to prevent unauthorized changes.

Note: The ESET Parental Control for Android will reach end of life on June 30, 2026. After this date, you can no longer use the ESET Parental Control for Android app and portal. Learn more in the ESET Parental Control support notice.

Webcam and Microphone Protection

This feature actively checks processes or apps that attempt to use the webcam and microphone in real time and notifies you instantly. This helps prevent unauthorized surveillance triggered by malware or any other app.

Device Control

ESET includes a Device Control feature that lets you monitor and manage external devices (CDs, DVDs, USB sticks, other disk storage devices, FireWire, and serial/parallel ports) connected to the system. It helps prevent data leaks and malware infections commonly spread through portable media by allowing you to restrict and block unauthorized devices and create custom rules for different device types.

System Cleaner

Malware can alter system settings, including the Registry Editor, Task Manager, and Windows Updates. The System Cleaner tool in ESET lets you restore the PC’s default settings and values in a single click.

Anti-Theft Protection

It is another helpful feature included in the ESET Home Security lineup. The Anti-theft protection module uses IP address geolocation, webcam image capture, user account protection, and device monitoring to help remotely track device usage and IP address, and to retrieve device data if it is lost or stolen. It helps protect personal data. You can also create a phantom account with limited permissions to protect the main user accounts if someone tries to tamper with the device.

HIPS (Host Intrusion Prevention System)

This protection layer in ESET Home Security focuses on advanced behavioral analysis and network filtering. It continuously monitors running processes, files, and registry keys to block sophisticated malware and unwanted activities that attempt to harm the device.

Ransomware Shield

ESET’s Ransomware Shield works alongside HIPS and uses behavior-based detection to monitor applications and processes. If any suspicious patterns are found that are common to ransomware or file coders, it blocks them instantly.

Safe Banking & Browsing

Compatible with popular browsers such as Edge, Chrome, Firefox, and Brave, ESET Safe Browsing & Banking safeguards sensitive information from various online scams while browsing or making online transactions. The feature runs in a protected mode that automatically launches with the default Windows browser.

Gamer mode

Once enabled, it disables pop-up notifications and pauses scheduled activities to minimize CPU usage for an uninterrupted work session. Core real-time protection continues to run in the background.

Other Noteworthy features

In addition to the key features mentioned above, ESET Home Security Essential includes the following features to strengthen device security further:

  • Web access protection
  • Email client protection
  • Email client antispam
  • Botnet protection
  • Network attack protection (IDS)
  • Browser Privacy & Security

ESET Home Security Premium: Features

This screenshot shows the ESET Home Security Premium interface, labeled as ESET Smart Security Premium in the app.

With ESET Home Security Premium, you get all the features of Essential, plus a few extras. It includes:

Unlimited VPN

ESET Home Security Premium includes ESET VPN, which provides a secure and private browsing experience on any network. Premium users can access up to 40 countries (depending on subscription and region), so you can browse safely and also access region-restricted content.

Note: VPN access is not available during the free trial period.

ESET Folder Guard

Lets you add important folders containing sensitive data in ESET Folder Guard to safeguard them against malware and untrusted applications.

Secure Data

Allows you to create an encrypted virtual drive or folder on an external device to store private and confidential data, helping prevent misuse or tampering.

ESET LiveGuard

This cloud-based security feature adds an extra layer of protection against zero-day and other unknown malware by analyzing their behavior in a sandbox.

Note: The Password Manager feature, formerly part of ESET Home Security plans, has been discontinued. However, you can use it until October 18, 2027, after which ESET Password Manager’s service will permanently close, and all stored data will be deleted. For more details, refer to the ESET Password Manager discontinuation notice.

ESET Home Security Ultimate: Features

It combines the security features of both Essential and Premium plans, along with additional tools for more complete digital protection.

ESET Home Security Ultimate includes the ESET Identity Protection feature, which continuously monitors the dark web and alerts you if any of your personal information is leaked.

Additionally, while all plans include Ransomware Shield to detect and block ransomware threats, Ultimate goes a step further with Ransomware Remediation. It helps back up and recover files in case a ransomware attack slips past.

Furthermore, Ultimate also offers advanced browsing and privacy protection, letting you manage website permissions and giving you more control over which sites can access location, camera, microphone, and notifications. You can also clean metadata by removing sensitive EXIF data from images before sharing online.

Another standout feature of ESET Home Security Ultimate is its router-level VPN protection. It helps keep every device in the home network secure at once. Just make sure the router supports WireGuard or OpenVPN.

Customer Support

ESET offers support through multiple channels. For instance, you get knowledge-base articles, an AI Advisor, user guides, FAQs, and help for renewal and activation. On top of this, human assistance is available through live chat, email, and phone support.

While the knowledge base and user guide are helpful, a more structured layout would make it easier to find the information you need. Email responses can take a few hours, and live chat agents are helpful for resolving technical issues. For sales-related queries, ESET usually directs you to phone support.

Note: You can access ESET’s Live Chat option Monday to Friday, 6 AM to 5 PM PT.

Which ESET Home Security Plan Should You Choose?

Choosing the right ESET Home Security plan mainly depends on how the device is used day to day.

Although ESET Home Security Essential is the entry-level plan, it offers more than just basic antivirus security. It includes real-time protection, a Ransomware Shield, and a two-way firewall that actively helps keep the device safe from known and emerging cyber threats. Besides, it also includes useful tools like Network Inspector, Parental Control, an Anti-Theft tool, and Banking & Payment protection, which many entry-level antivirus plans lack.

In short, ESET Home Security Essential covers everyday threats well. It is especially recommended for those who want reliable, lightweight antivirus and firewall protection at a good value, with useful extras.

On the other hand, ESET Home Security Premium is a solid upgrade if you want more control over privacy and data protection without moving to a full security suite. With ESET VPN, Folder Guard, and Secure Data, Premium enhances not only device security but also network privacy and sensitive data protection.

If you want a more complete package with extras like Identity Protection, ransomware recovery, and VPN router protection, then ESET Home Security Ultimate is the best choice.
